The Computational History of Science in the Era of Big Data and AI: Opportunities and Challenges

Historians of science today need to reexamine their careers in the era of big data and Artificial Intelligence (AI). This

transformative era not only introduces new research objects but also provides scholars in the history of science with novel

tools for data analysis and research. Those studying the history of science can now leverage computational tools to analyze

historical data. In this paper, I first give an overview of the computational history of science. Next, I discuss how big data andAI empower historians to analyze new data forms, employ new tools, promote interdisciplinary collaboration, and transform

academic publishing. However, it is important to acknowledge that this emerging field faces various challenges, including

data critique, tool critique, the training of a new generation of historians, and the reassessment of scholarly publishing in the

digital era. These critical viewpoints, though directed at the computational history of science, are also relevant to the broader

field of digital humanities.
